Thank you for choosing Broderbund Email Watchdog -- the email filtering application that puts you in control of your email. Email Watchdog protects against viruses and other forms of email-borne
malware by removing potentially harmful executables, scripts, and macros received either as an attachment or embedded within the email itself.
1. Before installing Email Watchdog, close any open programs, particularly programs used for Internet access (i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc) and any email programs (i.e. Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Netscape Mail, etc).
2. To launch the setup program, simply locate the downloaded Email Watchdog program and execute it. If Email Watchdog was received on CD, insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the splash screen.
3. After launching SETUP, follow the instructions in subsequent dialog boxes. A default installation will install to the C:\Program Files\Broderbund\Broderbund Email Watchdog directory.
4. You need to enter a password for Email Watchdog. Use a password you will remember or write it down and keep it in a safe place. The password will be needed should you ever wish to uninstall Email Watchdog.
5. If you wish to customize the features of Email Watchdog, choose CUSTOM and select the desired options. You can also customize Email Watchdog after it has been installed.
To uninstall Email Watchdog, you must first close any open email or email programs. Use the Add/Remove Progams icon found in Settings -> Control Panel to uninstall Email Watchdog. You will be prompted for the password.
If you have forgotten your password, please contact Broderbund Technical Support for assistance.
Email Watchdog is pre-configured for optimum protection. However, if you want to change the program defaults, Open Email Watchdog by double-clicking on the Email Watchdog icon in the system tray (mail envelope with blue arrow)
and select the desired features. Macro protection, scripts, executable attachments, and quarantine options can all be configured separately.
By default, all macros will be removed from Microsoft Office attachments, all Javascript, VBScripts, applets, and ActiveX objects will be removed from within the email message, and executable-type attachments will be quarantined.
When this removal occurs, you will see an alert window on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. It will indicate the name of the attachment that is suspicious and the sender and subject of the email. Also by default, originals of
modified files will be stored in quarantine. The quarantine is located in the folder c:\Emailqua. The Email Watchdog report viewer can be used to determine what files were quarantined and if any scripts, applets, or ActiveX objects were removed.
To disable Email Watchdog, right-click on the Email Watchdog icon in the system tray and select disable. To re-enable it, right-click on the Email Watchdog icon again and select enable.
In Windows 2000, Email Watchdog requires an account with administrative privileges to install. If you need to use an account from the domain user group or restricted user group, then you need to add this account to the power user group or
administrator group of the local machine.
Email Watchdog supports IMAP in Outlook Express, Outlook 98, and Outlook 2000 in all versions of Windows (except version 3.x). IMAP is not supported with other email clients, such as Eudora, Netscape and Pegasus.
POP3/SMTP is supported in all mail clients.
In rare cases, a very large attachment may cause Email Watchdog to hang up. Disabling Email Watchdog will allow the email to be sent or received.
Email Watchdog has been tested and been found compatible with these personal firewall and intrusion detection products:
* BlackIce Defender
* Zonealarm 2.6
* Norton Personal Firewall 2001 2.5 (previously known as AtGuard).
Email Watchdog is incompatible with Mcafee Personal Firewall. After installing Email Watchdog, Mcafee Personal Firewall will either allow or block all programs from accessing the network.
Email Watchdog is incompatible with Sygate Personal Firewall 4.0, Esafe Desktop 3.0, Freedom Internet Privacy, and AdsOff.
Antivirus scanners may trigger an alert on files as Email Watchdog tries to quarantine them. To resolve this, you can add the Email Watchdog quarantine directory (C:\Emailqua) to the antivirus software's exclusion list.
Installing Email Watchdog on a machine running Achilles'Shield or Virucide is not recommended. These programs should be disabled or uninstalled (preferable) before Email Watchdog is installed. After installing Email Watchdog,
the programs can be reinstalled or re-enabled. If for any reason you need help reinstalling Achilles'Shield or Virucide, please contact Broderbund Technical Support.
